An offering of a free heart will I give thee, and praise thy Name,

O LORD; because it is so comfortable.

Recently a friend reconnected with me.  Because of our time zone difference, it was almost impossible to speak with each other in real-time.

She was hurting bad.

How do you help a hurting friend?

I shared a soaking music youtube video and a few other resources.  As I write this, I am sorely aware of how inadequate that can be.

How do you heal a broken heart?  How do you fix betrayals?  How do you recover from hurt?

So I’ll meet you, God, in my darkest night.  Thank you for hearing my pain and my cries for help in the privacy of my soul.

The psalmist in Psalm 54 is in pain.  Much pain.  Yet in verse 6, he offers his free heart and praise God.

An offering of a free heart will I give thee, and praise thy Name, O LORD

God, thank you for understanding my pain, my difficulties, my challenges.  I know you don’t wish them for me either.  So thank you for being with me.

BUT. BUt. But. but.

Is this offering difficult for you?  It’s especially hard for me when I let too much noise and concerns rule me over.

So I won’t get in a hurry.  It’s time to sit and wait.  And drink of you. *

Why?

Because it is so comfortable.

Where no other sound is quite alive but only the ones I am meant to hear.

Let the numb, angry, disappointed heart go.  Let the pain whose sounds I have no strength to utter leave.

With you, I will sit, Lord and let my vulnerable tears flow.

An offering of a free heart will I give thee, and praise thy Name, O LORD
